WHAT I LEARNED FROM FACING MY FEAR
*Note: this post is a condensed version of the Coming Out Gold Podcast Episode 24 found here.
Welcome back to the RS Blog. Today I want to share some things I recently learned when I faced a fear and took a chance on doing that had terrified me. My hope is that my lessons will help you find the courage to face something you fear as well.

FACING DOWN FEAR
Have you ever felt frozen in place by fear? Has it ever kept you from going after something you want or trying something new? Most of us have experienced this. But I believe the truth is we want to be women who acknowledge fear and press forward anyway. We long to be women who aren’t held back in any way because we are free from the prison fear keeps us locked in. It is time to recognize how brave we are by stepping forward despite fear to go after the lives we love. Get ready to kick fear in the teeth and do the thing fear has kept us from for far too long.

YOU AREN'T ALONE IN FACING FEAR
Many of us feel trapped by fear. Due to social media, the risk of public failure and ridicule can seem insurmountable. Comparison has filled us with self-doubt and a lack of confidence. It is wrong to put your dreams on hold because you believe lies when you deserve to believe in the magic within yourself. You can accomplish the dreams you have for yourself as long as you are willing to ACT!
Numerous women I have worked with have been held prisoner by fear. They have allowed it to keep them small, safely tucked in a comfort zone even as their soul longed for something new. Fear is real. The voices in our minds can get noisy, and they often take a grain of truth and inflate it to an epic size that we can’t see a way around. But there is a way forward.

WHY I DECIDED TO FACE MY FEAR
In episode 18 on imposter syndrome, I announced that I was going to do a self-imposed challenge for March to help me clear up some roadblocks I had concerning my identity. I agreed to show up face-to-camera every day in March. I was BEYOND terrified to do this due to some lies people had spoken over my life that I internalized and made part of my identity. I had no idea how this challenge would impact me; I simply knew I had to do it. I had to face my fear head-on in a way that gave me no room to hide. As a result of doing so, chains have been broken.

THE LESSONS I LEARNED
At the end of this month-long experiment, I had some significant takeaways. On a funny note, I learned that if someone offered me a million dollars to not talk with my face or hands, I wouldn’t be able to do it! 😂 I learned I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. And that’s okay because everyone isn’t mine. On a serious note, I came to understand that beauty is subjective and ever-changing but one’s character is enduring. I found areas in my life where I had abandoned parts of myself. Finding them again allowed me to bring restoration and redemption to them. This reminded me of who I was always meant to be and what make’s me uniquely me. And as imperfect that is it doesn’t make me any less lovely.
Sometimes scary things end up being the path we take to come home to ourselves. Not only did I stop allowing the lying voices to echo in my mind, I saw myself through eyes of love and kindness. I found self-compassion. The intensity of harsh judgments I typically level on myself was greatly lowered. Here is what I know: If I can face my fear and destroy it in a way that brings freedom to my soul, you can face whatever it is you are afraid of and experience the same freedom. I have a simple plan for you to follow in your life to face your fears and move forward.

HERE'S THE PLAN
We are going to do this in a three-step process I call ACT:
- Acknowledge what it is you fear
- Consider the root or origin of this emotion
- Take a breath and then ACT by taking a small step toward where you want to move
Act on these three steps and you will learn to face the fear and move forward anyway so you are never held prisoner to fear again.
I challenge you to select one area where you know fear exists and examine it. Just state what is true without judgment. Then choose one thing you can do this week to face your fear and move forward anyway.

THE WINS OF FACING DOWN FEAR
I do not doubt that if you implement this plan, your life will change drastically. By taking these actions, you will:
- Minimize emotional reactions by learning not to judge yourself for having them
- Find a strength you never knew you had
- Build confidence in your ability to do hard things
- Heal broken places where you had abandoned your dreams and parts of your soul
- Walk a new path that will lead you home to yourself

CONSEQUENCES OF NOT FACING FEAR
By continuing to be a prisoner of fear you will:
- Stay hidden
- Fail to grow and thrive
- Keep going around the same mountain
As women, we are taught from birth to judge ourselves and one another. We are in this pattern of measuring one another for perceived levels of worth and lack. There is a better way to do life. Instead, we can choose to put down the measuring sticks we use, set aside judgments on ourselves and others, and let emotions just be without making moral battering rams out of them. We can acknowledge what is real and also take a step forward. We can act against fear by following the 3 step plan of acknowledging the emotion, considering the root of it, and taking a step forward anyway. I challenge you to implement this process so see immediate transformation in your life.

WRAP IT ALL UP
You are capable of doing hard things. Moving forward while you still have fear is possible. You just have to be willing to ACT – acknowledge, consider and take action. I believe in you and know you are strong enough to go after a life you love. If you accept this challenge and face down fear, please reach out and let me know about it.
